Submitted by - B RubertonNow that the Democrats are about to take power in congress, they seem to be unsure about what is needed to correct the glaring ethics problems that have plagued their predecessors. First of all legislation needs to be passed to get the lobbyists out of our congress. Not just off of the floor or out of the gym but out of the picture. In recent decades the influence from lobbyists has become so overwhelming, leading to the unbelievable escapades of former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, that this practice must once and for all be ended. By and large these lobbyists represent the interests of big business not average citizens. The result is earmark ridden legislation that is becoming unaffordable and unrealistic. Second, an independent ethics committee needs to be in place to be sure the ethics changes are followed. With the current state of corruption and influence in Washington, it is obvious that the representatives can not be expected to police themselves. Only with changes such as these will citizens begin to put some faith back into their government and begin to trust their elected representatives. |
