| 1 | 3 | 2009-08-17 | New authorization from congress to maintain troops in Iraq. |
Submitted by - B RubertonIn the past three months since two top U. S. generals said that the sectarian violence in Iraq is much worse than they had ever anticipated and could lead to civil war, the situation has only worsened. Without an objective gauge to tell if we have crossed the line to civil war in Iraq it seems well past the time to let Congress weigh in on the issue. Senator John Warner proposed the idea back on August 3, 2006 that the authorization from Congress was to topple Saddam Hussein and his Baath Party and that those objectives were attained many years and many lives ago. Congress did not authorize our troops to referee a civil war, nor have they officially declared any war at all since World War II. In light of all of the current allegations of mis-planning, mis-stepping and misleading by the current administration, and in light of the possibility of a wholesale shift in the balance of power in congress this November, this Proposition asks that Congress re-examine the authorization given to this administration to deploy our troops into Iraq. |
